CAN
FILM CHANGE THE WORLD?
Images can change the world.
Television coverage of Vietnam changed things forever.
Recent images from Iraq brought this sharply back into
focus, jolting a partially complacent world. Yet
on the other hand there is the media manipulation and
the use of imagery for disengaging, as illustrated in
War at a Distance.
But the immediacy
of the media and imagery is one thing. What about
film? More considered and reflective, and often
more accurate? Elements of the filmmaking community
have always shown passionate political commitment.
Raymundo Gleyzer (his final film and a documentary about
his life are screening at BIFF) is a tragic example.
But what is the impact of cinema? Does Super Size
Me do more than preach to the converted? What of films
such as The Corporation, a meticulous and searing account
of big business?
Mark
Achbar, co-director of The Corporation;
distributor Gil Scrine, responsible
for putting many films on Australian screens; and
Danny Zuvela, who runs the Wild Spaces Film
Festival will discuss the issue with Pat Laughren.

MAINSTREAMING:
WILL THERE BE INDIGENOUS COMMUNITIES LEFT TO FILM?
Indigenous
imagery on film has long been a controversial topic. Who
has the right to tell whose stories? Affirmative strategies
have changed the balance of power somewhat. Perhaps
now, echoing Philip Adams's famous quote we are able
to dream together. But what about the context?
Three guests
of BIFF, Jeanette Paulson (The Land
Has Eyes, Hawaii), Sekhar Das (Songs
of Mahulbani, India) and Kevin Lucas
(The Widower, Australia) will discuss their work and
experiences. As filmmaking of this sort at least,
cannot but be political, they will be joined by Robbie
Williams, Queensland ATSIC commissioner and other members
of the local indigenous community to ponder broader
questions.
Presented
in association with the GUMURRII Centre, Grifffith University.
