Presentation: The Sentimental Bloke
A
seven year restoration returns to Australian sreen's
Raymond Longford's much loved film, regarded as the
jewel in the crown of Australian silent cinema.
C.J
Dennis's poem of the same name is arguably one of the
most famous of Australian poems. Written in rhyming
couplets in Australian dialect, it is an extended poem
in 14 parts which charts the course of the “Sentimental
Bloke” as he courts, marries and settles into family
life with his “sweet bit er fluff”, Doreen. So popular
was it in the early 1900s, it was sent off to war in
small black volumes with the Australian troops.
The
film adaptation by Raymond Longford was bound to be
a hit at home but it was abroad as well. However, for
many years it has been lost to the world, with on partial
prints in existence. The discovery of a print struck
for the US release of the film launched a seven year
restoration project which, now completed, allows us
to bring back to Brisbane one of the most loved Australian
films of all time.
Bring
your whole family for this very special, free event
at City Hall. Check the Schedule for programming details.
