NETPAC (the Network for the Promotion of Asian Cinema) takes as one of its aims the promotion of Asian cinema's role in the development of cultural diversity and integrity in the face of late twentieth century globalisation. It involves filmmakers, critics, festivals, programmers, distributors, exhibitors and film educators. One of the ways of promoting Asian cinema is through the presentation of the NETPAC Award at film festivals. The AAPT Cellular One Brisbane International Film Festival was the first Australian festival to host the NETPAC Award. The 2001 NETPAC Award was presented to Tsai Ming-Liang for his film What Time Is It There?. We are proud to be able to present this award again. Jurors
Geoff Gardner was the founder of Australia's Ronin Films, the distributor dedicated to modern Asian cinema. A past director of the Melbourne Film Festival, he has been an adviser to BIFF since 1991. He is the director of the Mowelfund Film Institute, a unique film training centre with a mission to foster a more democratic culture of visual literacy through filmmaking.
