About BIFF

From Tuesday July 9 to Sunday July 21 2002 Brisbane comes alive with colour, spectacle and the latest cutting edge film from around the world. It's a film festival with you in mind, featuring films that arouse the imagination and embrace the vibrant art of filmmaking. This is captured in the new image of the festival, which subtly reflects film's ability to elevate your senses; to transport you to another world - a rich and diverse world.

Executive Manager of Festivals and Events at the Pacific Film and Television Commission, Mr Gary Ellis, said the new image also hints that often we each see something different in a film, which is part of what makes the world of film so exciting.

The diverse programme of this non-competitive festival includes features, documentaries and shorts, experimental work, animation and some video. The festival prides itself on showcasing Asia Pacific cinema.

The festival has as its patron Australian director George Miller (Babe 1 and 2, Mad Max, Witches of Eastwick, Lorenzo's Oil) and has become famous for launching films like The Full Monty, Strictly Ballroom, Doing Time for Patsy Cline, Feeling Sexy and Walk the Talk.

The festival attracts guests like Gillian Armstrong (Charlotte Gray, Little Women, My Brilliant Career); Geoffrey Rush (Shine, Elizabeth, Shakespeare in Love) John Seale, cinematographer (Oscar winner - The English Patient, Picnic at Hanging Rock, The Talented Mr Ripley); and Kevin Spacey (The Usual Suspects, LA Confidential, American Beauty).

The 2002 festival will be held at its traditional venues, the Greater Union Hoyts Regent Cinemas, Queen Street Mall and the State Library of Queensland. This year sees the festival expanding its programme by also including new venues Greater Union Hoyts Myer Centre and the Institute of Modern Art.
